Although Frisco is expected to keep growing, city leaders are dedicated to keeping growth manageable and ensuring that the community maintains an identity all its own. The city's 19 parks span more than 550 acres and provide a variety of amenities, including soccer fields; baseball diamonds; playground equipment; and basketball, tennis and volleyball courts. The Warren Sports Complex offers an eight-acre lake stocked with black bass and channel catfish. Golf, fishing and park facilities are available along with baseball, tennis, basketball, volleyball, soccer leagues and swimming.
Fitness buffs can work out at the Alumni Fitness Center, located on the Collin County Community College Preston Ridge Campus. The physical education facility offers indoor swimming at its natatorium. Swimming is also available year round in the municipal pool located at Youth Center Park. Hiking and biking trails are located in Preston Lakes Linear Park, Shawnee Trail, Oakbrook Park, Starwood Development Trail and Warren Sports Complex. The Frisco area is also home to some of the finest golf courses in the state.
The fine arts take center stage at Frisco's Association for the Arts. Each year, the association sponsors a number of events to increase awareness of the arts. Symphonia Frisco embodies the vision established by the association. The umbrella organization was designed to create a local youth orchestra, adult orchestra and chamber groups. The annual Holiday Pops concert is among the most successful and well-attended events in the city.
The Frisco Community Theater is a local theatrical troupe that presents drama, comedy, children's theater, and musical productions of original works and well-known favorites. Frisco also is within a short drive of 56 galleries, 23 museums, 22 theatrical centers, four orchestral organizations, four ballet groups and two opera associations, all of which provide more than 100 live performances nightly.
There are several professional sports teams located near Frisco, including the NFLs Dallas Cowboys, NBAs Dallas Mavericks, ALs Texas Rangers and the NHL's Dallas Stars.
Frisco recently added a minor league ballpark that features a farm club of the Texas Rangers. The area is also home to the Byron Nelson Golf Classic and MasterCard Colonial golf tournaments. And the Texas Motor Speedway and Lone Star Park offer thrills for racing enthusiasts.
One of the city's best-known facilities is the Superdrome, a world-class track cycling facility. Since the facility's inception in 1998, the international governing body (UCI) and the national governing body (USA Cycling) have chosen the Superdrome Sports Enterprise to host and manage prestigious cycling competitions, including the Olympic Trials in spring 2000. The Superdrome has hosted four U.S. National Championships, and the Superdrome hosted a World Cup Qualifier in 2003.
The local school district is considered one of the best in the state and is rapidly expanding to meet demand. When it comes to higher education, the Collin County Community College technology campus provides advanced technology training to more than 2,000 credit students. A number of four-year colleges and universities are also located in the area.
With more than 1,700 employees serving the needs of more than 13,400 students, the Frisco Independent School District is the city's largest single employer. In the last few years, FISD has grown by 22-27 percent annually in student population. Enrollment recently grew by 30 percent, and growth is accelerating. The district spans 72 square miles and serves residents of Collin and Denton Counties; residents of Frisco; and parts of Plano, Little Elm and McKinney.
With growth comes the responsibility to build for the future. FISD now has 15 elementary schools, four middle schools, two high schools, and one special programs-alternative school.
Health care has become increasingly important to local families, and facilities in North Central Texas meet the variety of its residents' medical needs. Facilities here boast state-of-the-art medical diagnostics and treatment technology, and they are staffed and operated by some of the country's leading practitioners and researchers.
